Q:  How big of a solar charger can I use with the RA-9?

A:  The RA-9 is rated up to 4.5 Amps, so we would recommend using it with up to a 60 watt panel, such as the PowerFilm F16-3600 or PowerFilm R60 or any combination of panels totaling around 60 watts.  If you have much more that 60 watts of panels, go with either the PowerFilm RV-9 (6 Amps for about 90 watts total) or PowerFilm CC12V-10 (10 Amps for about 150 watts total).

Q: No power comes out of the RA-9 solar charge controller when connected to the solar charger. 

A: This is normal. The RA-9 solar charger controller needs to be connected to a battery in order to work. The RA-9 is powered from the battery, NOT the solar input. A battery is required for correct operation and to power the internal circuits.
